ACTION RESEARCH: PROMOTING BEST PRACTICE IN THE PROVISION OF SUPPORT
FOR, ROMA PEOPLE WHO LIVE AND / OR WORK IN COUNTY CARLOW
CARLOW COUNTY DEVELOPMENT PARTNERSHIP CLG
Carlow County Development Partnership CLG was established in **Apply
on the website**, and is responsible for the strategic management and
delivery of a range of publicly funded economic and social development
programmes and initiatives to individuals, enterprises and communities
throughout Carlow Town and County.
This tender is being funded under the Carlow SICAP programme, with the
support of the County Carlow LCDC.
The aims of the SICAP Programme are to reduce poverty, promote social
inclusion and to improve the life chances and opportunities of those
who are marginalised in society, living in poverty or in unemployment.
It does this through a community development approach, and through
targeted supports and inter-agency collaboration, underpinned by the
values of equality, inclusion and social justice.
CONTEXT
In **Apply on the website**, Carlow County Development Partnership
(CCDP) and Carlow Local and Community Development Committee (LCDC)
launched the Carlow Integration and Intercultural Strategy **Apply on
the website**. This evidence-based strategy is underpinned by
extensive consultations with migrants and Carlow society. It notes the
diversity of Carlow?s migrant population and the absolute importance
of approaches that are bespoke, culturally respectful and empowering
? particularly of women and children.
Roma are among the migrant populations in Carlow. Many have come from
countries / societies in which they have long been subject severe
prejudice, discrimination and exclusion ? including in State
policies and practices. Due to official and unofficial, new and
historical prejudices, Roma are among the most mis-understood and
excluded population cohort, in several European countries, including
here in Ireland. Furthermore, due to government-led and / or induced
discrimination, many lack an affinity with a country of origin ? in
a cultural sense and as citizens.
Yet, their cultural vibrancy and resilience are among their most
enduring qualities. Harnessing their attributes and promoting their
inclusion would certainly enhance and enrich Carlow society.
AIM
This piece of action-research will map Carlow?s Roma community ?
their geography, their needs and their potential as active and engaged
members of Carlow society.
